Dozens of Migrants Die When Ship Sinks near Turkey
A boat was capsized in rough waters off the Turkish Aegean coast on Saturday. It was reported that the boat was carrying about 85 illegal migrants, apparently from the Middle East and Africa. At least 51 people were killed in the tragic attempt to reach the European Union (EU); the passage from Turkey to Greece has become a popular route among smugglers bringing illegal immigrants into the EU. Strong winds and rough seas hampered rescue efforts, and, as of Monday, only six survivors had been found. The six men, wearing inner tubes that kept them afloat, were able to swim to shore and summon help.
