Killer Amoeba

I was reading the news and gotten scared of this killer amoeba living in lakes called Naegleria fowleri (nuh-GLEER-ee-uh FOWL'-erh-eye). According to Wikipedia, Naegleria fowleri is a free living amoeba typically found in warm fresh water, from 25-35 degrees Celsius in an amoeboid or temporary flagellate stage. In humans, it can become pathogenic, causing primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM or PAME), a syndrome affecting the central nervous system, characterized by changes in olfactory perception (taste and smell), followed by vomiting, nausea, fever, headache, and the rapid onset of coma and death. It invades a swimmer's central nervous system via the nose and climbs along nerve fibers through the floor of the cranium to enter the brain. Victims generally die within 2 weeks of initial exposure. My oh my!

Naegleria fowleri was featured on the TV show House, on season 2, episodes 20-21. House is also known as House M.D. is an American medical drama television series.
